The honest answer: more often than most folks do, and a little less often than you might fear. Testing is the single cheapest thing you can do to keep your pool clear, your equipment healthy, and your weekend free of green surprises.

Here’s the cadence we give every customer who walks into the shop.

The short version

  • Test at home 2–3 times a week during swim season — more if the pool’s getting heavy use or the weather’s been wild.
  • Bring us a water sample every 2–4 weeks for a full, lab-grade reading on our SpinTouch. It’s free, every time.
  • Test before and after you add any chemical, open or close the pool, or recover from a storm or a party.

In the hot stretch of an East Tennessee summer, lean toward the more-frequent end. Heat, sun, and rain all push your chemistry around faster than people expect.

What you’re actually testing for

Five numbers do most of the work:

  • Free chlorine (FC) — your sanitizer. Too low and algae moves in; too high and eyes sting.
  • pH — how acidic or basic the water is. Drifts up over time and drags everything else with it.
  • Total alkalinity (TA) — the buffer that keeps pH from swinging.
  • Calcium hardness (CH) — too low eats plaster and equipment; too high clouds the water.
  • Cyanuric acid (CYA) — stabilizer that protects chlorine from the sun. Critical here, where the sun is relentless.

Why strips lie: Test strips are fine for a quick gut-check, but they fade, expire, and read “close enough” on a good day. They almost never measure CYA — and CYA quietly controls how hard your chlorine has to work. If your strip says everything’s fine but the water still looks off, that’s usually the gap.

Why the free in-store test is worth the trip

Bring us a sample in any clean container — fill it elbow-deep, away from a return jet — and we’ll run it through our SpinTouch system. You get a printed, parameter-by-parameter report and a plain-English plan: what to add, how much, and in what order. No upsell, no guesswork. Most people are in and out in a few minutes.

We do this every day for Maryville, Alcoa, and the rest of Blount County. It’s the fastest way to catch a problem while it’s still cheap to fix.

Test more often when…

  • It’s been hot, or you’ve had a stretch of heavy rain
  • The pool just hosted a crowd
  • You’re battling cloudy water or early algae
  • You just added chemicals, swapped a filter, or opened for the season

The bottom line

A quick home test a couple times a week, plus a free SpinTouch reading from us every few weeks, keeps you ahead of nearly every problem we see at the counter.
