East Tennessee winters are mild but inconsistent — we get freezes, but they’re rarely sustained. That makes closing your pool a little more nuanced than it would be in, say, Ohio. Done right, a proper closing protects equipment, prevents stains, and makes opening next spring much easier.

When to close

Most East TN pools should close once daytime temperatures consistently stay below 65°F — typically mid-October to mid-November. Closing too early invites algae before winter; too late risks freeze damage to equipment.

The closing checklist

  1. Test and balance water chemistry — pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness on target.
  2. Shock the pool one final time. Let it dissipate before adding winterizing chemicals.
  3. Add winter algaecide and a metal sequestering agent.
  4. Lower the water level (below skimmer for mesh covers; standard for solid covers).
  5. Blow lines clear. Plug skimmers, returns, lights, and main drain.
  6. Drain and store pump, filter, heater per manufacturer spec.
  7. Install the cover. Anchor it properly. Add a cover pump if you’ve got a solid cover.

Let us handle it. Closing is one of our most-booked services. We’ll do it right, document the chemistry, and you’ll thank us in March. Call or text (865) 567-6284 to get on the schedule.
